Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters Ep 1 RAW

My reactions to watching Go-Busters episode 1 without subtitles. SPOILERS AHEAD.

  • Well…that’s a depressing vision of things to come.
  • Oh god, that whole “afraid of chickens” thing is going to be a plot point isn’t it?
  • He got so scared he froze in place…?
  • So apparently there’s some awesome energy source that needs protection.
  • Oh those “putties” look awesome.
  • THE BRACER SAYS “IT’S MORPHIN TIME”
  • “Let’s Morphin” is the henshin call? Not sure about that.
  • It’s actually called a “Mophin Brace.” Fantastic.
  • The opening shows a whole team dedicated to the upkeep of the mechs. Excellent I love nuts and bolts stuff in my giant robots.
  • TRANSPORT. IT’S TIME FOR BUSTER. Dammit Japan stop making me want to buy your toys with your TV show designed to sell toys.
  • The head of VARGRAS is Jack Spicer?
  • No, he’s a flunky that reports to…a giant floating head in cyberspace. Okay yeah he’s cybernetic Jack Spicer. Goggles, coat and everything.
  • The evil mech are made by infecting every day equipment with a computer virus. Nice.
  • The rangers use transport tubes to leave the base, how very “Get Smart”
  • Not sure if they said ‘met on or face on. Could be a Go-Onger or Dekaranger call back.
  • Oh wow…so there’s a regular human sized monster of the week AND a giant monster of the week with some of the human sized monsters abilities operating independent of each other.
  • The giant monster goes right for the power plant thing. We got some Evangelion going on right here.
  • The HQ desks transform into a “battle configuration” for combat scenarios!
  • THE GIANT CAR MECH LAUNCHES OFF A SKYSCRAPER
  • That’s a Sakamoto motorcycle stunt right there…
  • and the car turns into a giant robot. Yusss.
  • OH MY GOD A BUILDING GETS HIT BY THE CROSS FIRE OF THE ROBOT FIGHT AND WE SEE THE PEOPLE INSIDE.
  • AND THEY KEEP THE BUILDING FROM FALLING OVER.
  • And the robot becomes a cheetah. IT’S A TRIPLE CHANGER.
  • I’m noticing the majority of the camera shots of the robot fight are done at “street level.” This really does a good job of selling the scale of the fight. It looks a lot less like a man-in-suit on a set.
  • DANCE NUMBER ENDING. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  • THE GIANT ROBOT IS DANCING. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  • THE ENTIRE MAINTENANCE STAFF IS DANCING IN THE HANGER OH MY GOD.

In summation: So I’ve got some Evangelion vibes with the premise of the villains targeting the heroes base for destruction and the city seemingly built to intercept and some Xiaolin Showdown vibes with the goggles and trenchcoat wearing flunky reporting to the giant floating head. The bit that seemed to imply Red was recruited for the team at a young age is fascinating (Trained for this his whole life it would seem?). The buddyroids don’t put me off outright, but I could do without them. The animal motif in general seems like a toy design that has nothing to do with the plot (kind of like Fourze’s space theme having nothing to do with the setting except where it’s shoe-horned in). Frankly if the buddyroid/animal theme wasn’t there I’d probably be raving about this show. It’s got a lot of little mecha motifs that I love. Hopefully it gets subtitled.
